Tourism strategies, policy, guidance and place making
Cumbria Tourism
We worked with Cumbria Tourism on developing the adventure tourism sector in Cumbria, specifically a market review and appraisal to identify and assess best growth prospects for the adventure tourism sector in the county.
The adventure tourism sector has become an important part of the tourism and leisure market in Cumbria, with a strong focus in the Lake District. The Adventure Capital UK (Ad Cap) ‘brand’ has been created to co-ordinate and facilitate investment to develop and promote adventure tourism in Cumbria. The focus of our work has been to review and assess the adventure tourism sector – its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats – from a customer and market perspective, test and develop strategic priorities for the sector in Cumbria and provide a coherent framework with defined actions and interventions for developing the adventure tourism product.
North Wales Outdoor Sector Vision and Action Plan
The team was commissioned by Tourism Partnership North Wales to prepare a new Vision and Action Plan for the outdoor sector in North Wales. North Wales is internationally recognised as providing excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, with a strong activity ‘offer’ based on its outstanding environmental assets and range of activities available.
However, partners recognised a lack of co-ordination and connection across the broad policy and programme agenda associated with the outdoor sector.
The focus of our work included a market review and assessment of the outdoor activity sector leading to the preparation of a challenging vision and action plan for the sector in North Wales. We also advised on the form and function of a strategy forum and action-partnership to drive forward the plan.

We were appointed by South Tyneside Council and One NorthEast to provide specialist leisure input to assist develop an economic appraisal of the scheme together with securing outline planning.
The focus of our work was to establish a new riverside environment, known as the New Shore. The New Shore follows the river frontage and is linked to existing and proposed residential communities via a series of terraces. The area designated for the New Shore is characterised by significant area of redundant docks. Our specific role was to test and determine a viable and deliverable activity mix that will provide a range of opportunities for existing (and new)communities as well as visitors to the town.

Our principal involvement related to the identification of practical and achievable commercial development opportunities, compatible with the area’s strategic aims. We also developed a recommended approach to funding.
