National Nature Reserves, Natural England
Working for Natural England we carried out an initial review of three National Nature Reserves. The Reserves are located in the South West, Yorkshire and North East. We identified opportunities for new visitor facilities and services. Our work included carrying out a market assessment, examining case examples, setting out the
product mix for each Reserve, carrying out a penetration rate analysis and preparing a financial model for the Reserves.
Hayling Island Seafront, Hampshire

Working in a multi-disciplinary team with Terra Firma Consultancy and HGP Architects we produced a masterplan for the Hayling Island seafront area.
Hayling Island is a popular centre for watersports based activities including kite surfing, sailing and windsurfing. The overall masterplan includes introducing a specialist activity centre to service the needs of ‘adventure tourists’ and the local community.
Wigan Flashes, Wigan
Working with Wigan Borough Council and Partners, Planning Solutions Consulting were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study for a visitor centre at Wigan Flashes. The Flashes are one of the most important urban wetland sites in England in terms of biodiversity. Objectives included increasing access to the Flashes and introducing a gateway facility to the Greenheart Regional Park and identifying revenue generating opportunities. Our work focused on carrying out a market assessment, consultation exercise, an options assessment and Indicative visitor and financial modeling, including identifying capital costs.
Aquarium Study
We were commissioned by an overseas client to assess the potential of introducing a new adventure style aquarium in to the UK market place, which included a SCUBA diving area.
Craft Centre Study – Creating the Visitor Experience, Midlands
We carried out research into the craft centre sector (including site visits) in the UK. Our work identified critical elements for the operation of a financially sustainable craft centre.
EnviroPark – Portsmouth & SE Hampshire Partnership, Portsmouth

Working in a multi-disciplinary team PSCL carried out a visitor modelling exercise for an innovative country park style visitor experience, which incorporated a visitor centre, amphitheatre, trails and interpretation. We also advised on product development options.
PSCL also advised on the wider strategic issues and specific operational areas.
Sheerness Docks, Kent
We carried out a review of the tourism and leisure markets to identify the options for leisure / tourism development within the working Port of Sheerness. We were part of a multi-disciplinary team contributing towards a larger master planning exercise.
Our work programme needed to balance the needs of the current commercial operation, restoring a range of important historic built structures with the potential to increase access to this valuable heritage resource.
Pleasley Pit, Derbyshire

In a multi-disclipinary team with Arup and architects Faulks Perry Culley & Rech, PSCL was commissioned by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) to carry out a feasibility study for the regeneration of Pleasley Colliery, a Schedule Ancient Monument. We were subsequently commissioned to prepare a financial model and identify potential management options for the project to ensure that the project could be delivered.
The purpose of our study was to formulate a masterplan and development strategy for the disused colliery which would see the heritage asset restored in a sympathetic manner to realise the ambitions of a Friends Group, the local community and visitors. The development strategy identified ways to improve access, introduce interpretation
and revenue generating opportunities including an appropriately sized cafe, a retail area and guided tours.
Touring Caravan Site, Leicestershire
We carried out a feasibility study on behalf of Leicestershire County Council to assess the potential of introducing a touring caravan site within the grounds of a leading visitor attraction in the County. This was based upon a detailed market review.
Holiday Homes, Devon
We were commissioned to produce a financial model to demonstrate the viability of holiday home development of 150 holidayapartments.
Feasibility Study – Forest Lodge Accommodation, Midlands
We carried out a site review, market assessment, case study analysis, identified the key product mix and produced a financial model for the development an inland holiday village, including forest lodges and associated leisure facilities. We also advised on key operational considerations and marketing requirements.
